For the very first time LHMU Aged Care members from across Australia have united to fight for a Fair Share for Aged Care.

Blue Care aged care employeeLHMU Aged Care members know there are big problems in the industry and are committed to fighting for big solutions.

Thousands of LHMU Aged Care members have signed the Fair Share for Aged Care postcards with many more expected to sign, calling for the Prime Minister to meet with LHMU members in each state.
LHMU has written to the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd requesting the leadership of government meet with LHMU members to share their concerns and discuss possible solutions to the current aged care crisis.

Who's involved in a Fair Share for Aged Care

LHMU represents:

  • the majority of direct care and support workers employed in the residential and community aged care sector;
  • aged care workers in WA, SA, ACT, NT and Qld;
  • Whilst coverage and titles may change slightly state by state, LHMU represents Enrolled Nurses, Carers/Patient Care Assistants/ Nursing Assistants and all Cleaning, Catering and Laundry staff;
  • 75% of the aged care workforce.

With an ageing population and longer life expectancy the importance of the work of our members is becoming more prominent and visible to the community as families have to make the difficult arrangements for the care of their elderly loved ones.

LHMU members are engaged directly in assisting in the activities of daily living of the frail aged. Their contribution towards the quality of care outcomes, and the dignity of our aged, is immeasurable.

Together we'll push for:

  • Fair remuneration of aged care workers;
  • Fair indexation of subsidies;
  • Fair mandatory staff inductions; and
  • Fair staffing ratios in residential aged care facilities.

After working in the Aged Care industry for 21 years on poor wages and heavy work load which would never be tolerated in Acute care settings it is about time that the pollies got a wake up call as aged care is crumbling at it foundations due to neglect.The government has know this was a mess waiting to happen in this industry but choose to sweep it under the carpet as we in aged care hear of the massive wages other workers make with out the hard work that goes into this industry.We as workers must unite and be heard enough is enough
