Laminex members claim victory
Members at Melbourne’s Laminex factory have claimed victory after a dramatic 20-day stand-off with their employer.
Members went on strike after Laminex refused to offer a fair pay rise and back-pay owed to them.
Members maintained a round the clock vigil outside the factory gates. Their message to their boss was loud and clear: treat us with respect.
Members won a 3.5% pay increase over 15 months and a special bonus worth close to $1000.
Delegate Derek Shane said the courage and unity of members forced Laminex to make a better offer.
“The company realised how strong we were standing together and they realised they had to come up with something that would get us back to work.”
Members also learned some valuable lessons about each other, Derek believes.
“They stood by each other. They are a reliable bunch of guys and gals and they’ll fight for their cause,” said Derek.
